What the symptom is actually telling us
Start by listening. Steady clicking means the igniter has power and is trying, which points away from electrical trouble and toward gas flow or a wet, dirty igniter tip. No clicking at all puts the spark side under suspicion: the switch under the knob, the wiring, or the spark module. If one burner lights and its neighbor won't, the shared parts are fine and the problem is local to that burner. If every burner is dead, we look at the module or the power supply. Cause family one: a clogged or wet burner port
This is the cheapest and most common answer. Boil-overs leave sugar and grease in the small gas ports around the burner head. Cleaning spray or a spill can soak the igniter tip, and a damp igniter sparks without lighting. All the burners click when you turn a single knob, which points to a failing switch or moisture inside the control area, and the burners often light late or not at all. These parts sit behind panels. Cause family three: gas supply and safety devices
If the igniter sparks fine and the burner is clean, look upstream. A gas shutoff that got turned during other work, an empty or closed propane tank, or a stove that was recently moved can all interrupt supply. Some ranges use a safety valve that has to sense heat before gas keeps flowing. That's more an oven thing than a cooktop thing, but it matters. Here's a telling clue: the oven quit too, or the other gas appliances in the house are acting odd. If you smell gas at any point, stop. Turn the knobs off, open windows, get out, and call your gas utility before you call us.
