Homeowners' pick for appliance repair across Alabama
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice
If your ice bin keeps coming up empty in Huntsville, we diagnose the ice maker before anyone buys a part. Maybe you're getting a few hollow cubes, or one frozen clump you have to chip apart. Ice makers rarely quit all at once. They leave clues. We read those clues the way we do on a service call, cheapest cause first.

What an empty ice bin is actually telling you
Ice making is a short chain of events. Water gets called for, a valve opens, the mold fills, the mold gets cold enough, then a motor or arm dumps the cubes out. Break one link and the bin stays empty. So the first question isn't "what part failed." It's "where did the chain stop?" Small hollow cubes point one direction. No cubes at all point another, and a frozen clump points somewhere else entirely. When you call, tell us what's sitting in the bin. That one detail narrows things down faster than the model number will.
Suspect one: water is not arriving
This is the most common family of causes, and the cheapest. A shut-off valve behind the fridge got bumped. The supply line kinked when somebody shoved the fridge back against the wall. The filter is long past due and choking the flow. Or the freezer is set too warm, the fill tube ices over, and the next fill never happens. Check the door dispenser first. Water coming out slow, weak, or not at all means the ice maker is starving for that same reason. Fix the water and sometimes nothing else was ever wrong.
Suspect two: the freezer is not cold enough
Ice molds need real cold to cycle. Plenty of units won't even attempt a batch above roughly 10°F to 15°F in the freezer. The causes are usually boring: a door left ajar, a torn gasket, food packed against the vents, a condenser coil buried under dust and pet hair. Soft ice cream tells you something. So does frost on the packages. Run your hand along the door seal and feel for cool air leaking out. If the whole freezer is off, then the ice maker is a symptom, and chasing the symptom wastes your money.
Suspect three: controls, switches, and the maker itself
Every ice maker has an off switch, and it gets bumped during cleaning all the time. Some use a wire feeler arm to sense a full bin. Let that arm hang up on a bag of frozen peas and the unit decides it's full and stops. Others use an optical sensor that a smear of frost will fool. Past that you're into the mechanical guts: fill valve, mold heater, motor module, thermostat. Those are ours to test, not yours. Before you assume any of it failed, confirm the switch is on and the arm swings clear.
Safe checks you can do in five minutes
Look in the bin and describe what's there. Press the water dispenser and judge the flow. Confirm the ice maker's on/off switch or setting is actually on. Make sure the feeler arm swings freely and nothing is leaning against it. Check the freezer setting, and check whether the door shuts all the way. Note when the filter was last changed. Then empty the bin completely and wait 24 hours, because a healthy unit should produce something in that time. Stop there. Don't pull panels, don't unplug and pry, and please don't aim a hair dryer into the freezer. Call us with your notes and we'll work from there.
What we do that a checklist cannot
We put a meter on it. We test the fill valve for proper resistance and confirm it's actually getting the signal to open. We measure real mold temperature instead of trusting the display. We check inlet water pressure too, since a perfectly good valve still won't fill on weak pressure. Then we force a harvest cycle and watch every stage in order: fill, freeze, heat, eject. That shows us which link broke. If somebody already looked at it and the answer sounded like a guess, we're happy to give you a second opinion. Reach us.
Ice Maker Stopped Making Ice — straight answers
How long should I wait before deciding it's broken?
Give the fridge 24 hours after any adjustment or filter change. A newly installed unit, or one that was recently unplugged, can take that long to drop its first batch. Empty the bin first so you can tell new ice from old.
Why is my ice hollow or tiny?
Hollow, undersized cubes nearly always mean the mold isn't filling all the way. Think restricted water: a clogged filter, a shut-off valve that's only partly open, low house pressure, or a fill tube with ice in it.
Is it worth repairing or should I replace the fridge?
Depends on what failed. Water valves, filters, and switches are routine repairs on a fridge that's otherwise sound. We diagnose first, tell you which part is at fault, and then you decide with real information in hand.
How it works
- Step 1
Describe the symptom
Tell us what you hear, smell, or see. Is it grinding, is there a puddle on the floor, is a code blinking at you? Small details narrow the list of likely causes before we ever pull the machine away from the wall.
- Step 2
We examine the machine
A technician works a checklist: power, controls, sensors, motors, seals, drainage. We test instead of guessing. Then we walk you through the actual fault and what your repair options are.
- Step 3
You choose the treatment
Some faults are worth fixing the same day. Others mean the appliance is near the end of its life. We tell you which one you're looking at, and we finish the repair once you say go.
