Lint does not build up overnight. It coats the duct wall a little at a time, and as the passage narrows, moist air cannot escape. Heat stays trapped in the drum. That heat is the damage. It cooks the thermal fuse until it opens, shortens the life of the heating element, and bakes the drum seals hard until they crumble. Meanwhile the motor runs twice as long per load. When we open a dryer that failed at year six instead of year twelve, we usually pull a handful of packed lint out of the blower housing. The dryer did not wear out. It suffocated.
The two-minute habit that prevents most of it
Pull the lint screen after every load and wipe it clean with your fingers. Once a month, hold that screen under running water. If water pools on the mesh instead of pouring straight through, dryer sheet residue has sealed it, so scrub it with a soft brush and a little dish soap, rinse, dry it all the way, put it back. Then look behind the dryer. The flexible duct should curve gently and not fold into a Z, because kinks trap lint at every bend. Last, step outside and watch the vent flap. It should open when the dryer runs.
How often the duct itself needs clearing
For an average household running four to six loads a week with a short, straight duct, once a year is a reasonable rhythm. Move to every six months if any of these apply: a long run to the roof, more than two elbows, a family of five doing daily laundry, pet hair in the house, or a ribbed flexible duct instead of smooth rigid metal. Stacked units in a closet clog faster, since the duct usually turns sharply right out of the machine. Homes with the dryer on an interior wall have longer runs and need more attention. Pick a month you will remember and tie it to something, like the time change.
Symptoms that mean prevention time has passed
Run this checklist. A cycle that takes longer than an hour for normal loads. Clothes hot to the touch but still damp. The top of the dryer warm enough to be uncomfortable. A humid, laundry-detergent smell filling the room. Little or no lint on the screen anymore, because it is going into the duct instead. No air puffing out the exterior vent while the dryer runs. A burnt or toasted smell at any point. If you count three of these, stop using the dryer until the vent is cleared. If you smell burning, unplug it and call us for a diagnosis.
When it is the vent and when it is the dryer
