What a clogged filter quietly does over months
Water in a dishwasher gets reused during the cycle. It sprays, drains through the filter, then sprays again. When that filter is packed, the water carries food particles right back onto clean dishes, and that's the grit you feel on your glasses. It gets worse than gritty, though. Trapped food rots and the smell settles into the door gasket. The pump has to pull water through a blocked screen, so it works harder than it should. Spray arm holes plug with seeds and bits of label paper, and eventually you find standing water in the bottom that never fully drains. All of it starts at one small screen.
The habit that prevents nearly all of it
Open the door and pull the lower rack out. Look at the floor of the tub, near the back center. Most models have a cylinder filter that twists a quarter turn counterclockwise and lifts straight out. Under it sits a flat mesh screen that usually lifts out too. Rinse both under hot tap water, and use an old toothbrush with a drop of dish soap on the mesh. Skip wire brushes, they tear the screen. Drop the pieces back in, twist the cylinder until it seats, and you're done. Two minutes, no tools, no panels. If the filter doesn't turn freely, check your use-and-care sheet instead of forcing it.
How often, honestly
Once a month covers most homes. Rinse plates lightly before loading and you can stretch that. Scrape only, never rinse, and you'll want it every two weeks. If you run the dishwasher daily, cook a lot of rice or pasta, or feed a big family, look weekly for the first month and learn your own pace. While you're down there, glance at the drain area for a toothpick, a fruit sticker, or a piece of broken glass. Wipe the door gasket with a damp cloth on the same trip. Doing it all at once is what keeps it from getting skipped.
Warning signs prevention won't fix anymore
Some symptoms are past maintenance. Water standing in the tub bottom hours after a cycle, a hum that changes pitch or grinds during the wash, top-rack dishes coming out dry but still dirty, a smell that's back a day after you cleaned the filter, or detergent caked in the dispenser when the cycle ends. Any one of those tells us the trouble has moved into the drain hose, the pump, a clogged air gap, or the water inlet. That's diagnosis work. Stop running loads so you're not pushing debris deeper, and call us.

Most made in the last fifteen years do. Older models often use a self-cleaning grinder with a fixed screen instead. Look at the tub floor for a twist-out cylinder. No cylinder usually means no user-serviceable filter.
Can I run the filter through the dishwasher itself?
No. It needs hot tap water, soap, and a soft brush, by hand. Run the machine with the filter out and debris reaches the pump, which is the expensive part you're trying to protect.
Will a cleaning tablet clean the filter for me?
It helps with grease film and hard water scale on the tub walls. It won't lift a mat of packed food off mesh. Tablets supplement hand cleaning, they never replace it.
